Frank Maxwell Tubb was born in the small (population 500) Texas town of Robert Lee on March 26, 1923 to Arthur and Mary Tubb. He was the oldest of four children. Frank excelled in track and football while in high school. His athletic career continued at San Angelo College where he ran track. He was on the student council and a member of the fraternity the Drakers. When not in school, he worked at a high end men’s store to make ends meet.
After his freshman year, funds ran out and Frank moved to Carlsbad, NM to work in an automotive shop with his high school friend Harlan Green. A family tragedy in December 1941 caused Frank to return home. It was at this time Frank decided to enter the service. Frank wanted to fly so he signed up with the Air Corps and reported to San Antonio, TX. His next stop was the Pine Bluff School of Aviation in Arkansas. Despite his best efforts he failed to qualify as a pilot.
More to come.
Frank, along with Orville Garrison, and Henry Worley, were interred in a group burial on 16 Sep 1949 at Ft. Smith National Cemetery in Arkansas. This cemetery was chosen because of its close proximity to the hometowns of all three.
