Bobby, or “Swede” as he was known to his friends, was born Febuary 7, 1922 in Stamford, CT to Niels and Blanda Jensen. His mother was born in Sweden and his father was born in Denmark and emigrated to the US in 1912. Niels served in the US Army from December 1917 to June 1919.
After high school, Bobby enrolled at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. In 1942, he was living at the Delta Tau Delta house and finishing up his second year. His draft card listed him as 6 feet, four and one half inches tall and weighing 185 pounds.
He enilsted in the Air Corps as a private in Miami, FL on November 13, 1942, serial number 13152192. In July 1943 he reported to Garner Army Air Field in Uvalde as an aviation cadet for primary training with class 44-D. Basic was at Waco Army Air Field in Texas and advanced at Brooks Field in San Antonio where he earned his wings. Additional training was at Columbia and Greenville, SC before his crew headed overseas.
